Privacy Policy

Last updated 10 September 2026

Movie Friend helps you find someone in your city who wants to see the same film, at the same show, then meet at the theatre. This page explains what information the app collects, why, and who can see it. It is written to describe what the app actually does — not a template.

The short version: your phone number is never shown to anyone. A work or college email, if you choose to verify one, is never stored as readable text and never shown to anyone. Safety features — reporting and blocking — are free and available to everyone, and a report is confidential: the person you report about is never told who reported them.

What we collect, and why

InformationWhyWho can see it
Phone number Signing in and identifying your account Only you and Movie Friend. Never shown to other users.
Name, age, sex, occupation, languages, city Building your profile and finding people to match with Other signed-in users, as part of matching — first name only until you have met
City Showing films playing near you. Detected once during setup from your device's location, or entered by hand — the app does not track your location afterwards. Other signed-in users in the same city, as part of matching
Films and showtimes you mark "interested" or "going" on The core of matching: finding someone who wants to see the same thing Other signed-in users in your city, so matching can find overlap
Work or college email address (optional) Earning a "Verified professional" or "Verified student" badge Nobody. Only a one-way cryptographic hash of the address and its domain are ever stored — the address itself is never saved as readable text, and is never shown to anyone, including us.
Messages with a match Letting two matched people coordinate once both have confirmed they've arrived at the venue Only the two people in that conversation
Post-show answers (did you go, did you meet someone) Your own personal stats, and understanding whether the app is actually working Only you
Reports you file about another user Trust and safety review Nobody but us — not even the person you reported

What we do not do

Who we share information with

The app runs on Google Firebase (authentication, database, and the server-side functions that verify a work email and moderate reports). Google processes this data on our behalf, under its own terms, to provide that infrastructure — it is not shared for its own purposes.

Film listings — titles, posters, runtimes, certificates — come from TMDB. This flows one way, into the app; nothing about you is sent to TMDB.

If you tap "Book tickets," you leave the app for BookMyShow or a similar ticketing site to complete your purchase. We do not see your payment details, and their own privacy policy governs that part of the visit.

Data retention and deletion

Your data is kept for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and everything tied to it at any time from the You tab in the app ("Delete account"), or by emailing admin@moviefriend.in if you no longer have the app installed. This removes your profile, any blocks, any pending match requests, and any reports you filed or were named in. Chat messages and arrival check-ins tied to your past matches are not deleted, since they are also part of the other person's own conversation history — but with your profile gone, nothing in them can be traced back to identify you.

Age

Movie Friend is for adults. The app requires you to confirm you are 18 or older when you set up a profile, and it is not directed at children.

Child safety

Movie Friend has zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) in any form. Creating, sharing, soliciting, or possessing child sexual abuse material, or using this app to exploit or endanger a minor, is strictly prohibited. Any account involved will be permanently banned, and the activity reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) or the relevant law enforcement authority.

Every match and every chat in the app has a Report and Block option, and reports reach a real person, not a queue nobody reads. If you see something that concerns you, report it in the app, or email admin@moviefriend.in directly.

Security

Data in transit and at rest is protected by Firebase's own encryption. Access to your profile data by other users is limited to what matching genuinely needs — see the table above. Server-side rules, not just the app itself, enforce who can read and write what.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top will change and the update will be described here.
